A Faster Start in Canada: SIN@Entry to Launch Fall 2027
Canada is streamlining the immigrant arrival experience with an ambitious new initiative called SIN@Entry, expected to launch in the fall of 2027. The program will allow new permanent residents and authorized temporary workers to receive their Social Insurance Number (SIN) directly at the port of entry ā eliminating the need for a separate trip to Service Canada after arrival. This marks a major step forward in modernizing Canada's integration services.
What Is SIN@Entry? A Social Insurance Number is required to work legally in Canada, access government programs, and file taxes. Currently, newcomers must visit a Service Canada office ā sometimes waiting days or weeks ā to obtain their SIN after arriving in Canada. SIN@Entry would allow eligible individuals to receive their SIN at the airport or land border crossing upon their arrival, integrated into the existing customs and immigration processing flow.
The initiative is a collaboration between IRCC, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the department responsible for issuing SINs.
Why This Matters for Newcomers For new immigrants, the days between arrival in Canada and receiving their SIN can be filled with anxiety and logistical challenges. Without a SIN, newcomers cannot legally begin work, open a bank account (in some cases), or access certain government benefits. The faster a newcomer can integrate economically, the better the outcomes for both the individual and the Canadian economy.
SIN@Entry is expected to be particularly beneficial for temporary foreign workers who arrive with job offers already in hand and need to begin work immediately upon arrival.
Eligibility and Rollout Plans The program is expected to initially focus on permanent residents arriving through the Express Entry and PNP streams, and temporary foreign workers with employer-specific work permits. A phased rollout is planned, beginning at major international airports ā Toronto Pearson, Vancouver International, and Montreal Trudeau ā before expanding to other ports of entry.
Candidates must have pre-submitted required information through a digital pre-arrival portal to be eligible for on-the-spot SIN issuance.
Looking Ahead to 2027 The SIN@Entry program is part of a broader suite of digitization initiatives within Canada's immigration and settlement ecosystem. Other planned improvements include digital landing documents, pre-arrival banking partnerships, and integrated credential recognition pathways. Collectively, these measures aim to ensure that Canada's rapid immigration growth is supported by equally robust settlement infrastructure.
