Three New Express Entry Categories
IRCC has announced the creation of three new category-based selection streams within the Express Entry system, expanding the range of skilled workers who can be prioritized for permanent residence in Canada. Building on the success of existing categories like healthcare, STEM, and trades, the new categories target sectors where Canada faces growing demand and persistent talent shortages. Here's what you need to know about each new pathway.
Category 1: Social and Community Services The first new category targets workers in social and community services roles ā including social workers, community health workers, addiction counselors, shelter workers, and youth care workers. These occupations are critical to supporting Canada's growing immigrant and refugee populations, its aging demographic, and its mental health and addictions crisis.
To qualify, candidates must have at least one year of paid, full-time work experience in an eligible social or community services occupation (NOC TEER 2 or 3) within the past three years. Language requirements remain consistent with other category draws ā CLB 7 for TEER 2; CLB 5 for TEER 3.
Category 2: Clean Energy and Environment The second new category reflects Canada's commitment to its net-zero emissions goals. The Clean Energy and Environment category targets professionals working in renewable energy, environmental assessment, emissions reduction, and related fields. Eligible occupations include solar and wind energy technicians, environmental engineers, climate scientists, carbon trading specialists, and grid modernization engineers.
This category is expected to grow significantly over the next decade as Canada accelerates its energy transition and builds out new clean energy infrastructure across the country.
Category 3: Supply Chain and Logistics The third new category addresses a persistent pain point in the Canadian economy ā supply chain resilience. Since the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in global and domestic supply chains, Canada has been working to strengthen its logistics infrastructure. The Supply Chain and Logistics category targets warehouse managers, logistics coordinators, freight brokers, customs specialists, and procurement professionals.
This category recognizes that the complexity of modern supply chains demands highly skilled, educated professionals ā not just warehouse floor workers ā and that these roles are critical to the functioning of virtually every sector of the economy.
When Will Draws Begin? IRCC has indicated that draws under the three new categories are expected to begin within three to six months of the announcement, pending finalization of regulatory changes and system updates. Candidates who believe they qualify for one of these new categories should ensure their Express Entry profile is complete and current, with accurate NOC codes reflecting their most recent work experience.
The exact CRS score cutoffs and draw frequencies for these categories will depend on pool composition and government immigration targets, which IRCC reviews periodically.
